An Integrative Review of Workplace Incivility Instigation among Healthcare workers:Based on Affective Events Theory

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this integrative literature review was to analyze the affect, cognition behavior of workplace incivility instigation among healthcare workers based on Affective event theory.

Methods: This research was conducted according to Whittemore and Knafl¡¯s integrative review method. It contains the stages of problem identification, literature search, data evaluation, data analysis, and presentation. The databases PubMED, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Web Of Science (WOS) were searched for relevant searching terms in English.

Results: A total of 1,519 searched papers, we selected 26 papers were selected for the final data analysis. Based on Affective Events Theory (AET), the selected papers were classified into six topics; work environment features, work events, instigator¡¯s disposition, affect reactions, work attitude, and behaviors. As a result, the features of healthcare setting were vertical culture, increasing workload, difficult work conditions such as intensive night shifts and three/12-hr shifts in a row, etc. Under circumstances that pose a significant risk to the patients¡¯ health and safety, self-centered and narcissistic temperaments, negative emotions such as anger, and attitudes such as hostile judgements of others have been identified as causing verbal, non-verbal and covert forms of disrespectful behavior.

Conclusion: This is study can be a basis for understanding rudeness in healthcare settings withthe knowledge of the medical environment, work events, disposition, emotion, work attitude, and behavior related to the occurrence of uncivil behaviors. To prevent harm from disrespect, it can be used as basic data to develop interventions focusing on incivility instigators.
